EDITED: So thrilled to be a winner of this contest two years in a row--and to once again be paired with a wonderful author for a critique! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
ORIGINAL POST
A year ago, I entered this same contest on a whim, and I was one of the lucky winners of a critique from an established children's book author. When I received this wonderful news, I was actually in the hospital with complications from cancer treatment. I'm lucky to be alive. I'm entering this contest again this year with gratitude. Thank you to the creators and judges of this contest who granted me this win last year that helped keep my picture book dreams alive.
Thank you, Harvest Moon
By Sharon Fujimoto-Johnson
Thank you, harvest moon, for the rice in the fields
the glowing persimmons and fuzzy chestnuts in the trees
and underground, the sweet potatoes as round as mice.
The rice will be pounded into full moon dumplings.
The persimmons will dry and sweeten in your sugary light.
Baa-chan will roast the sweet potatoes in a bed of coals.
Soon, the red dragonflies will loop over the rice fields.
Autumn leaves will fall away from the trees like yellowed poems.
Baa-chan and I will make wishes as old as the earth.
Let the children grow strong and tall.
Let the fields and trees be full of harvest.
Let the harvest moon shine on us.
